Gear Up for Winter:
Happy Valley Women's Cycling Group Ride

Winter riding presents unique challenges, but with the right preparation and gear, it is an incredibly rewarding experience. Join Two Brothers Bicycle Company & Happy Valley Women's Cycling for a group ride on January 6th, 2025, and conquer the cold!

Below you’ll find some tips on how to get ready, as well as our personally curated gear recommendations to set you up for a great ride.

1. Layering for Success:

The key to staying warm is layering. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep your skin dry. Add an insulating mid-layer like an insulated jersey, and top it off with a windproof and water-resistant outer shell.

Two Bros Gear Recommendation:

  • 45NRTH Grünnur Merino Wool Base Layer: Merino wool is a fantastic natural fiber that regulates temperature and resists odors. It also insulates even when wet, unlike cotton or even many other tech fabrics.
  • 45NRTH Naughtvind Jacket – Bike specific outerwear has several advantages over standard articles given that it is designed with cycling in mind. For example the Naughtvind jacket boasts some quality features like:
    • Bike-focused design includes longer drape in back
    • Asymmetrical zipper to prevent chin rub
    • Water & wind-resistant shell with stretch for riding comfort
    • Side-body ventilation for temperature management
    • Zippered and open rear pockets to conveniently stash ride essentials
    • Reflective accents on arms and rear pockets for safety

2. Protect Your Extremities:

Your hands and feet are most susceptible to the cold. Invest in high-quality winter cycling gloves and warm socks paired with insulated footwear. Consider shoe covers or even winter cycling boots for extra warmth.

Two Bros Gear Recommendation:

  • Cobrafist Pogies: These handlebar mitts provide an extra layer of protection for your hands and often come with reflective elements for added visibility.
  • Sturmfist 4 Winter Gloves: These gloves are designed for extreme cold with a 5-layer construction that provides exceptional warmth and dexterity.
  • Ragnarok Tall Boots:  Built for extreme conditions, these boots combine waterproof protection, superior insulation, and a rugged outsole for confident cycling and off-bike adventures.

3. Enhance Your Visibility:

Winter days are shorter, so visibility is crucial. Wear bright colors and use a powerful front and rear light set to ensure you're seen by motorists.

Two Bros Gear Recommendation:

  • Trek Ion 200/Flare RT light set: This is a powerful combo with a 200-lumen front light and a super-bright 90-lumen rear light, both designed to be bright enough for daytime visibility, but also feature multiple modes for optimal safety on every ride.

4. Bike Prep & Maintenance:

  • Tires: Consider wider tires with lower pressure for better traction on potentially icy roads.
  • Fenders: Fenders are essential to keep you and your bike clean from road spray and slush.
  • Maintenance: Clean your bike regularly to prevent salt and grime from damaging components.

Two Bros Gear Recommendation:

  • A Bike Wash!
Winter's tough on your bike. Road salt, grime, and moisture can do real damage to your components leading to a shorter lifespan for your ride, so show your bike some love! Regular cleaning during the winter months is key to keeping it running smoothly and preventing corrosion. Trust us, your bike will thank you!

5. Pre-Ride Essentials:

  • Fuel Up: Eat a nutritious meal before the ride and bring your favorite gels or snacks as well as water to stay energized and hydrated.
  • Bike Check: Inspect your bike before heading out. Ensure your brakes, gears, and tire pressure (especially as the temps drop) are all in good condition.
  • Know the Route: Familiarize yourself with the route and be aware of any potential hazards like icy patches or areas with limited visibility.

Two Bros Gear Recommendation:

  • Shorter rides: GU tabs in your water bottles, and a backup gel in case of emergency, because nobody likes to bonk!
  • Longer rides: LMNT packets in your water bottles, and a combination of gels and chews throughout the ride to keep your energy levels up and ward off cramps. LMNT is a salty shop favorite for high effort or endurance rides. For the nerds: Learn more about the science of hydration.
  • Any ride: Hot hands handwarmers can be a life saver, especially for the post ride hangout.
